Say that you are running for an elected post. The initial results seem to indicate that you've lost, so you call your opponent and congratulate him, and concede. However, the votes continue to come it, and, when totalled, show you to have received a substantial number of votes, so that you have more than your opponent (enough to avoid a recount). Have you won the election, or does the fact that you conceded mean that you have given up, and are just s.o.l.?

You win, the election results are not official until the Board of Elections says so. If you actually did get more votes, you are the winner, regardless of whether you "conceded" or not.
Conceding mainly means you aren't going to ask for a recount or challenge in court, etc. especially in a close race.

You've lost. You only concede when it's apparent that you won't win. If, you conceded an election early, you would still be losing.

Why? It's like throwing in the towel. It's like saying, "I don't want to lose by a landslide, so I'll just quit while I can save face."

Let us not be naive. It is very possible that this particular election may fall victim to voter fraud. It is very possible that BOTH sides could be guilty; however with what ACORN has done, it would seem that the Democrats for Obama may be guilty of this. A Hillary Dem.

Here in the United Kingdom, this situation never arises. A result is only declared when every single ballot paper has been counted (this includes postal and absentee ballots).

They stop counting once an elect has conceded defeat, I think.

i am not sure of the actual answer here but i would say since you actually conceded..then you lost....this is why i abide by the don't count your chickens before they are hatched rule.

You lose, you gave up, which means you took yourself out of the running.
