Sometimes it starts with one try, most of the time it takes awhile. If I let it idle for awhile its usually ok. Sometimes I have to keep reving it or else it dies. When Im waiting at stop signs or lights if I dont keep it revved up it dies. Any suggestions?

The carburetor probably needs cleaned.
There is a small jet called the pilot that flows gas
at low rpms, it gets plugged or partially plugged
and may be your problem.

Along with cleaning the carb, and the air filter, and replacing the spark plug, adjust the valves.

If this doesn't fix the problem, do a compression test. You should have at least 100 psi. Less that that, and the bike will not start easily sometimes, and won't idle well.

I was going to answer this but Scott, Pete P and Ducattista beat me to the pump.

Basically give your bike a good service and an overhaul. Seeing its nearly 25 years old it will feel like its having a jubilee.

Sad to say but I dont see to many of todays bikes being around in 25 years. Nice one Honda!.

...and your spark plugs could be foul. My 1989 fzr600 used to have the same problem so I had to have the carbs cleaned, spark plugs replaced and the bike dyno tuned. Now it no longer stalls at lights and starts every time first time, unless it is very cold.

Who ever gave ducatisti a bad rating is an idiot. I don't know if she's really girl like her avatar, I think she might be a 65year old male motorcycle tech. I've read a handful of answers from this person and they know their stuff!
