I have a GE washing machine. Model #WBXR1060T8WW. It sounds like a train when it goes into the spin cycle. I asked a question earlier about the damping straps breaking and forgot to mention this. Could this be the bearings gone bad? And if so you have to replace the whole motor on these, right?

Yes --- use it til you can not take it no more -- then get another --- bearings are going out.

Open the washer door. Push the inside of the drum at the inside top edge. This should not move if the bearings are good. Don't get confused with the drum support spring and stabilizers movement. Anyone who can repair cars etc should be able to change the bearing for you. There are shops that sell spare parts take make/model number with you. Price guide for item £35 - 40 and a pack of bear bottle of wine for the person doing it for you.

I didn't answer the "bad straps" thingy because I figured it wasn't enough clues. Now I can tell you to look for a new machine. This one with repairs is about the price of a new one. It sounds like the clutch and the gearbox are going, that's why it's off balance and the straps are breaking, the repairman should have seen this and, checked it out before charging you or told you.

You should check the levellers on the bottom of the machine and make sure the machine is level, this could be causing the machine to bounce around slightly and causing this noise.

if it's real loud it may be the bearings, and if it is, time for a new washer.
But it could be the belt is loose or flapping, too.
there is a bearing in the drum of the washer that, to repair, costs maybe 3-400 dollars for labor.

shake the spindle side to side, and up and down. there should be no movement, other than the whole inside moving. if it is loose, bad bearings
