You'll want to find the amount of cubic feet you will need.

48" x 12" x 10" = 5,760 cubic inches

12 x 12 x 12 = 1,728 cubic inches = 1 cubic foot

5,760/1,728 = 3.33 cubic feet

The large potting soil bags and large garden soil bags normally come in 2 cubic feet per bag. It should tell on the bag. Make sure to use potting soil and not bagged garden soil. So you should need about 2 bags per container.

soil is figured in cubic feet... which is 12"L X 12"W X 12"H... = one cubic foot... so if your planter box is 4' X 10" X 12", you should need approximately 4 cubic feet per box, now remember that new soil when it is added, has air in it so it will probably need just a bit less to begin with... then add some later as it settles...
