The first year or two after you start having a menstrual cycle, it is normal to have irregular periods and even very different amounts of flow, cramping, and so forth. Some women will never have regular cycles and the most regular of women can have stress, an illness or trauma throw their timing off.

Unless you are sexually active and worried about pregnancy there is little to worry about, most likely. However, seeing or at least calling your physician is a good idea to put your mind at ease. If you are uncomfortable talking to a male doctor, ask to speak with a nurse.

Welcome to womanhood! You can expect the first year to be really weird. Periods will seem different each time (sometimes they'll be heavy, sometimes they'll be light, and cramps come and go, as do headaches, backaches, etc), and they might not always come when you expect them.

The stringy bloody stuff could be clotting, which is normal. If it is accompanied by pain or a foul odour, make an appointment to see a gynaecologist. It's not fun, but gynos are necessary and you'll be seeing them once a year until menopause. Even if you do live with your dad, this needs to be something you can be open with him about. He's responsible for you, so he needs to know what's going on with you if you decide you need to see a doc.
