Here's something I've learned to do: savor the small things, and make meditations out of ordinary experiences. Like the aroma of your morning hot cocoa, the crunch of the Frosted Flakes, how the cold milk in your cereal contrasts with the warmth of your mouth. On the way to school, really notice the smells and try to remember where you experienced them. The next day, ride with your eyes closed, and see if you can tell where you are just by the smells. When you really pay attention to these tiny experiences, you actually will learn to appreciate the greater things in your life as well.

Smart...U got the concept of life earlier than most...Some people NEVER get it and before u know it it's gone...I wrote a poem along the same lines..>ENJOY
TICKING TIME
Rushing to the finish line,
Never keeping track of time,
As the days pass, so do the weeks,
Months and years, the clock ticks.
Never looking at today,
And always planning for one day
As if one day will always come,
So you say why bother with this one.
Never took a look around,
And paid attention to each sound
Never looked up at the sky,
And admired the birds fly
Never looked down at the ground,
And saw the creatures roam around
Never stopped to realize,
Your life is fading before your eyes
Just a minute in a day,
Is not too much to take away
Just to see what life is worth
On this place that we call Earth.
Everything will one day pass
So try and make the moments last
Good or bad, things go away
All of them will end one day.
It’s your choice to take the time
Before you reach your finish line.

I admire you for your mature thinking at such a young age and that shows signs of a future responsible Citizen.
Well sweety there are so many things that you can do to live your life to the fullest instead of merely existing. For Instance you can volunteer yourself for charity work instead of just giving the money which puts you in their shoes and will also provide you with great self satisfaction end of the day.
Instead of simply trying out for school musical why don't you give it shot by trying to write a play for the school musical of teen morals?
Don't just do things for the mere sake of doing it but do it with good reasoning that would allow you to live your life to the fullest and leave something behind to the ones who come after you to look up to.

Take a lot of chances - not like life threatening situations, but do things you wouldn't normally do. Push past your comfort zone. Be adventurous. At school become political - take up a cause or come up with an idea you'd like to see implemented and become an activisit. At home, meditate to learn how to focus fully on everything you do, every moment. Tune in to the wisdom of older people. Trust yourself. Don't tie yourself down too early, but be kind. Travel. Stay fit. Find joy in everything and beauty in everyone.

It sounds like you're already on the right track. I wouldn't worry about the charity thing cause you're in high school...try reaching out to people, being a good, helpful, friend, and an inspiration to others. High school is full of scared, lonely, isolated people who would love to have someone to just talk to! And join the musical too.

First of all, would be serving others on a daily basis. Doing things for others will ALWAYS make your life seem more fulfilling and will always make you happier. Also, learning what you're living for--what your overall purpose in life is--would help. If you know what your purpose in life is...living for God, serving others, etc., or whatever it is, then you'll be able to live up to that and feel fulfilled, and a fulfilled life is a life. Not an existence.

A philosophy I've followed all my life is to live as if this is the last day of my life. Remember that it may be as none of us knows when our lives will end. What would you want for your last day? To be doing something mundane like watching TV or would you rather it be doing something interesting and exciting?
Make the most of each and every day of your life. Each day is precious and will never happen again.

To "live" instead of just exist, is a great goal! The fact that you are in 8th grade and ask this question, is not weird, it shows that you have a good mind.
The most important thing that I have learned in my life (I'm 63 y/o)
is that it is important to have a close relationship with God. Knowing that God exists, that He is active in our life, that He has complete power over everything in the universe, that He loves us more than we can imagine, and that He wants to help us in every detail of our lives; is the most exciting thing that there is.
To me, that is the most important thing involved in living our life and not just "existing". There are of course too many tips on how to live and not just exist to mention them all, but I will try to tell you the most important things that I have learned about this.
One thing that I think is important is to not be a "sheep". Sheep are followers of others and do whatever the group says is the politically correct thing to do. Be your own person and don't be afraid to go against the crowd.
Please don't accept everything that your teachers in school say is true, just because they are teachers! This is especially true about values and science (evolution is one axample). and even more so when you go to college.
Evaluate what they say against your own experience and against everything else you have learned to be true. The one exception to this is the Bible. I hesitate to say this because it goes against what I have said and because I didn't realise that the Bible was a reliable guide until I was about 27 y/o.
Talk to God in a personal way. Tell him about your concerns and ask Him for help and answers to your questions. I have found that He always answers me when I ask Him important questions.
Sometimes He answers me with ideas that come into my mind soon after I ask the questions. Sometimes He answers me with words that are in books, in movies, in TV programs; that I realise are from Him. Sometimes He answers me with images that come into my mind soon after I ask the question.
Another important thing I have learned, that is related to your question, is to pay attention to the present moment. Yes we have to plan for the future and yes we have to reflect on our life, but to pay attention to the present most of the time is essential to life and not to just exist. We are only alive in the present moment. The past is gone and the future has not happened yet.
God bless you in your life. Because you asked this question, I suspect that you will always "live" instead of just "exist".

First and foremost, believe in yourself. You're unique, so celebrate that. Then head to Superviva to check out other people's fun goals: http://superviva.com/idea-lists/ I find that achieving one goal every day, no matter how small, makes me feel alive. Good luck!
