It is the Grim Reaper's SCYTHE -- he Harvests Souls -- and like a harvest of wheat -- he uses the unnaturally sharp blade to finish the separation between the soul and the body so the soul can go on its journey to the afterlife.

OK - this is what everyone else is TRYING to say......
The Grim Reaper uses an instrument called a Scythe (and yes, that's Sithe with a hard "i" and silent "e"). In older folk tales and myths, the Grim Reaper would use his scythe to "harvest" the souls of the recently departed, or on occasion to take the soul of someone who opposed him. The idea of "harvesting" souls comes from the fact that the scythe is orginally a type of farming tool, which was used to harvest wheat and other grains from the fields, making it easier to do. Not until the Machine Industrial Revolution did the scythe go "out of business" so to speak. If you travelled through an area of Amish territory, you might still see Amish farmers using scythes out in their fields, as they abhor anything to do with technology.

It is called a scythe, and I don't think he holds it as a prop. I think he uses it to harvest lives.
