I am a police officer and I have rotating shifts everyday. I rarely get enough sleep and when I do go to sleep, I have insomnia. I average about 5 hours of sleep each day. I am curious of how many hours you get to sleep on a work day.

Oh ya, me too as healthcare provider, I work 12 hours a day. I'm used to sleep late at night, with wakeful hours since my boyfriend calls me from time to time from work. He work night shift, so more or less, I get 4 to 5 hours of sleep daily too except my off days, which is the happiest days of my life because I can take enough rest and sleep. I can even sleep 12 hours during my day off to catch up those days I lack sleep. We need enough sleep since lack of sleep below 6 hours a day will lead to serious heart problems as what I've read in the internet.

An American study linked life spans with sleep amount and found that those who sleep 4 to 7 hours live longer lives, with those sleeping less than 4 or more than 9 hours having about a 30% increased chance of early death, similar to moderate obesity.[1]. The National Sleep Foundation however maintains that 8 hours of sleep is optimal, claiming improved performance in tests, reduced risk of accidents and a better immune system. However, this does not apply to children and adolescents, particularly young children who require as much as 13 hours a night.

Wow you sound like me.

I will sleep for 2 hours before waking up, for about half an hour, then drop off for an other hour or 2, if I am lucky.

But I have a medical condition that causes a lot of pain, so sleep does not come easily.

Have a talk to your doctor, to see if there is something he/she can give you to help you sleep, but be careful some medications can causes drowsiness, which you do not need with your job.

Good luck

I would say that you need to let your doctor know now before it gets worse, which it can. I used to sleep 7-8 hours at night during the week and a least 10 on weekends. Now I am lucky to get 3. I was told if I had come in when this first started, the doctor could have given me something right away that would have prevented my body's time clock from being so ought of whack. So now we are working back to my body's time clock or close to it I hope.

If I'm lucky 7-8. More often I get 6-7. By the way, I hope you find a way to get more sleep. As a police officer, I'm sure you'd want to be wide awake and alert if you confront a dangerous suspect!.

I get about 7 or 8. I would imagine that you need more than 5 hours of sleep a night. But I think quality of sleep is more importany than quanity.

I don't get enough sleep......because i have trouble sleeping at night. One thing i can tell you is....take a vacation and stay home and sleep......because been a police officer it's a tough job, you got to be on calls, (alert) at all the time....and that means no sleep.
Best wishes and good luck
