No. You can charge it through the USB cable that comes along with the package. The optional adapter allows you to charge directly through a wall socket. This gives you a shorter charging time compared to doing so through your PC.

If it has a cradle, it will probable charge in it. Optional adapter is usually for the car (not a bad idea). If it doesn't come with a charger, and software, what good is it?. be careful of E-bay sales, they can be deceiving

Nope. You can also charge an iPod over USB.
