We have a natural wood fireplace in our home that was built in 1965. I would like to have a fireplace insert installed. Does anyone have any advise regarding the best insert manufacturers or installation requirements to consider? Thank you!

I want to install a wood fireplace insert with a blower. I was hoping to stay away from a gas insert - we really like the wood fire.

Your correct to get one with a blower. Remember you will still lose a percentage of your heat. I use wood heat only, for forty years on the Canadian border in Northern Minnesota. Wood heats three times, once when you cut it from the work, then when you chop it up, from the exercises, then when you burn it. I don't know the exact figures but without an insert you loose about 80% of your heat, I think about 35% with an insert, up the chimney.
I went to a boiler years ago when I had a heart attack, it's much cozier and not as strenuous.

I have a Blaze King insert in my fire place and it works really great. It has a power-full fan and the thermal draft control makes for a good slow burn.
The only thing I would say about install is that they are very heavy and that makes it hard to move for cleaning.( they need to be pulled out every year or creosote builds up on top and causes a fire on top of it. It happened to me.)

For convenience, eficiency and lower maintenance I would suggest a pellet burning air tight stove with a viewing window. My parents found this to be the best compromise after many decades of burning wood for home heating.
