Im on a tight budget & I like to give gifts to all of my friend's children for Christmas. This year, I was thinking of making personalized designs, with their name, on the computer & printing them out on the iron on T-shirt transfer paper that is available & putting them on shirts to give as gifts. But I'm wondering how well these hold up. I don't want to spend a lot of time doing this, only for the transfers to peel off after the first time the shirts are worn. Anyone who has experience with washing T-shirts w/iron on transfers, please answer, so I know if this would be worth my time or not. Thank you, in advance

I don't know about the iron on transfers that you make your self but the ones you can buy are normally good if used correctly. But the reason I am answering is because a good way to keep iron on transfers from peeling from the edges is to take fabric paint and trace the outline of it. It helps to seal it and it adds to the picture I think.
Also you should always wash the t-shirt first so that if it shrinks it won't ruin the transfer, or bleed. You could place a wash cloth over the transfer when you iron it to help from burning it.

My package recommended a white 50/50 t-shirt. I used a light turquoise for my husband's and it didn't turn out as well.
The iron has to be just right, not too hot or it'll leave brown scorch marks, or too cool and not seal it good.
The first 3 or so times after wearing them, I hand wash the tee in cold/coolish soapy water and hang outside to dry. Cold sets the ink so there's not so much bleeding.
The only color (so far) that bled onto the shirt was green, as it had a grass scene.
I think they're worth it. No one else has a tee like mine, plus I won a 3rd place ribbon at the fair for it.
None of ours have peeled.

We did these for our company picnic last year. The ink does bleed onto the shirt, especially if its a white shirt. They are fun for novelty t's that will be worn once. I ended up throwing mine out after washing it because it did bleed.

It depends on how well you iron it on, but be careful not to burn the shirt.
