He's 20 y.o, we've been together 6 months, and he likes music...clothes...um i dunno guy stuff

why not you try this. take breakfast together first, and tell him you two will spend this day together by donating every baggers you meet on the street and give help anything to anyone on that day TOGETHER. you will find it is really feeling good.

First of all, how long have you been together? How old is he? What kind of stuff does he like? Answer these 3 questions and then I'll edit my answer and give you some great ideas based on your answers.
EDIT:
You could get him a CD from his favorite band.....and then, even though the man usually does this, take him out for dinner at his favorite restaurant or go do something he enjoys.

sporting goods. What are his hobbies? There is always a great gift in a good sporting store, and one for any budget, and any age. Great sunglasses, or goggles, cool clothes, ski gear, fishing goodies, paint ball supplies, pocket knives, golf paraphernalia, you name it, a good sporting goods store will have it. If you need help, write down some things he likes, such as baseball, football, golf, hunting, fishing, paintball, basketball, volleyball, etc. Whether he does these things, or simply likes them, show the list to someone that works at the store, and they will make suggestions in your price range.

He might also enjoy an Itunes gift card so that he can legally download music from Itunes..

How about a wallet with your picture in it? You can get a nice leather one at Fossil for about 25$, or you could get him some cologne you think smells good. Or maybe even a watch! Whatever you think he'd like...

I think men tend to appreciate practical gifts. Give him a gift certificate for something he likes to do, or give him a coupon that says he can redeem it for a certain evening for a home-cooked meal by you.
