The cartridge o-ring keeps tearing because the water supply pipe it butts up against has a nick in it. What I really need to know is if the tube can be replaced. It has a hexagon inside it that makes it appear to be removable with an allen wrench. Any ideas? The alternative is to replace the whole unit and I am not into ripping walls apart.

I found what I was looking for. It was the 'seat' that was worn out, I removed it with an allen key and replaced it in seconds. I don't get any points for answering my own question , though. Damn.

There are several different types of cartridges, since I don't know which one you have Ill give you the simplest answer and I hope it helps you. If you have a nick in the pipe remove it with emery clothe or a small file. I don't know about removing the tube, I would have to see what type of cartridge you have.

You may have to and depending upon the age and livable condition of the home this may be inevitable and beneficiary to the value of the same. For me I would strongly consider "what may be IS what must be done." The project may not be as bad as you think!! Check out the diy.com & hgtv.com.

The ring is tearing as you put it in (only possibility) try some Vaseline on the next one before you replace it.
