To reset how Windows XP handles virtual memory:
(-> means "Click" or "Go To".)
Right clicking "My Computer" opens "System Properties" ->"Advanced" ->Performance" -> "Settings" ->"Advanced" ->"Virtual Memory" -> "Change". Here is the amount of memory that has been alloted for Windows XP to use as virtual memory. Using the Radio button, choose "System Managed Size". This will help you recover if virtual memory handling has encountered a problem. If you choose "Custom" you should set this to an amount that equals about half as much as the amount of your physical RAM, (bearing in mind that not enough and your system will freeze, and too much may corrupt your hard drive data). Then click "Set" -> "OK" ->"Apply" ->"OK" ->"Apply" ->"OK" The System Properties window will close. Now reboot your computer. It may boot into Windows slowly as it sets up your new "Paging File".

Right click on "My Computer" and choose properties.
Click on the advanced tab and click on the settings button under performance.
Click on the advanced tab in the performance properties window, and choose the "change" button.
In the virtual memory screen choose "system manged size" and hit OK. Restart your computer. Virtual memory will be back to normal.
