story that conveys the importance of understanding either ratio and proportion or percents. Your story should be mostly non-mathematical, so that someone who has never taken a math class can understand what you are saying. The important thing is that you convey your opinion in such a way that the story is fun to read. Feel free to use humor, hyperbole, or whatever.

any ideas?

You need a STORY (like a "Once upon a time" deal) or an explanation?

As for the "someone who has never taken a math class can understand it", try writing as if you were trying to explain it to a toddler.

Off the top of my head....try a really simple story. Usually in math books they say how [insert the crap that you're learning about here] is/are used in everyday life. Start from there. Ask yourself how one usually uses ratios/proportions/percents in real life (besides your stupid math class!). That's all I got.

Good luck! (Hang in there....math's a real *****.)

Here's one...

Little Jimmy was a typical 6-year old who LOVED chocolate cake. He ate it every chance he got. One day, his father put two pieces of chocolate cake on plates and put them behind his back. He said, "Jimmy, would you like 1/8 of the cake or 1/16 of the cake?" Now, Jimmy knew nothing of fractions or percents, but even HE knew that 16 was bigger than 8, so he said, "The 1/16!" So his father gave him the smaller piece, and Jimmy learned the most important rule of fractions: Less is More.

You can stretch it out if it needs to be longer, of course, but you get the idea.
