I think it's the old nature vs. nurture debate.

That's a question I debate quite often. Sometimes the answer can be obvious if you have one person who comes from a stable family who had a strong presence in their early childhood years and the other may either come from a broken home with neglect and abuse or inspite of parents having a strong presence the child may have been "babied" so much to the effect that they never suffered any discipline. But then I think of my father who comes from a family of eight who immigrated to the states from holland in the 60's. Their parents had a prearanged marriage in Indonesia...I really would rather not get into too much detail out of respect...but sufficite to say that all eight of the children had horrible childhood. As I said I can't say more but I have no idea why my father turned out as well as he did. He is like no other in his family...everyone adores my father b/c of the great giving person he is...he is always putting himself last...I have no idea...my brother and I were raised by the same parents...and while we both hold all the strong values from our parents we are quite different.
