That question is irrelevant, they are both entirely different species, and as such they are both smart in different ways.. both cats and dogs are highly intelligent species as well as having individuals who have different levels of intelligence. You really can't compare them and say that all cats are smarter than dogs (or vice versa) there are individuals of each species that are more gifted than others and less so. My cats all learned how to open cupboards, drawers and doors by watching the oldest cat, and yet my dog still cannot grasp the concept of it no matter how much he watches the cats. Then again my cats cant learn how to sit, spin, jump or rollover no matter how much I try to teach them... but the dog easily learns from me how to do tricks.. with the exception that my other dog is not nearly as fast a learner as the first dog. It doesnt mean any one of them is smarter than the other it just means they each have different but equally amazing skills and abilities.

Dogs and cats seem about the same intelligence. The problem is the actual physical ability of the 2 animals. If you close a door on a dog the dog will most likely not be able to ever leave the room knawing and scratching at the door. But a cat on the otherhand will turn a doorknob as it has seen people do. I have also observed cats figuring out how water containers that have spouts..and if it presses something it will get water.. also there is footage jokingly showing cats flush toilets. while dogs chase their own tail.

cats learn to survive and have an innate curiousty about them.
Dogs seem to learn to get by and fit in with their owners.

I am afraid all you cat lovers are going to hate the truth, but here it is. Dogs are more intelligent on average and this is well supported empirically. I will use the latest and best example, for brevity's sake. Dogs have " object permanence ". This means that if you show a dog something and then take it out of his sight, he retains a mental representation of the object. Cats do not have a clue in these experiments; out of sight, out of mind, to a cat. I could go on all day long about neuronal connections, brain size and the like. Why do that though? These recent " object permanence " experiments have put dogs way ahead in the intelligence race.

PS I have yet to see any science here, except my own. All opinion and no truth. Typical of the YA crowd. It is no wonder that math and science are falling by the way side in our schools.

PPS To say that cats can " learn " to open cupboards, is the height of ignorance. Neither breed has been shown to do any such thing, except by accident.

Both actually, we don't have the necessary tools to tell the difference. Cats as you see in the movies and TV are doing tricks like dogs and such, so I guess I have to ask a free question, why don't you have the ability to train the cat like you can with a dog?

canines do have larger brains than cats (Schultz & Dunbar, 2010), yet recommendations length isn't a reliable indicator of intelligence (Purves et al., 2001). that's illustrated by the actuality that neanderthals extremely had larger brains than present day people (Braun, 2008). even with the undeniable fact that, the kind of neurons contained in the cortex is correlated with intelligence. in this degree, cats have the ease over canines, with 3 hundred million neurons in a cat’s cortex while in comparison with one hundred sixty million in a dogs's. this means that cats have added data processing skill

just my thoughts-I think dogs are more trainable so they appear smarter but cats are actually smarter because they do what they feel not what they are told. I say this as a dog lover that has much respect for cats.

Acually, it seems as if dogs are smarter (certain breeds are more intelligent), but in truth cats are just as smart. They just see no point in learning anything.

Cats. Dogs are often lost and are so gullible. A cat thinks before doing something unlike a dog.

dogs... but in some cases, cats can be smarter too

How can you compare the two, as they are very unique in their own ways? .... But, because I don't know as much about cats as I do dogs, I would say dogs.
