they have a freewheeling clutch so there is a minimum drain on hp, maybe 2 or 3 most , but when you turn it on it can go up to 8 or 10 :(

You people who gave hillary a thumbs up are morons. How would using a shorter belt make the accessories run faster? Did the pulleys magically change sizes because of that? You will not really gain any horsepower. The biggest draw on the engine is your water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. The AC compressor won't take any power unless you have the AC or defroster on. If you don't turn on the AC in the summer, it will be pretty much just as good.

0 HP....

The only time Horsepower is used up is when the compressor is "engaged" or ON . Sure there is a fractional loss of spinning the pulley bearing but it isn't worth measuring.

If you need HP just make sure A/C or compressor is in off mode. Also defrost mode runs compressor as well.
Vent mode does NOT use compressor.

You will gain NOTHING, as the compressor only is a drag when in use for A/C or defrost.

You will notice the defrost doesn't work very well at all either. The A/C system de-humidifies the hot air blowing and clears the windshield faster.

Not that much. 5 hp? my buddy runs a chevy motor in his dirt track racecar, and he rufuses to run an alternator, because of HP loss. The HP loss is minimal, yet it will give you just that much extra. Besides, it's winter, and, you don't need A/C anyway. What are you out? 5-10 bucks for a new belt? try it!

None. And the guy that said you will get better mpg is wrong. If the belt you have is in good shape, don't replace it. Using a shorter belt will make the other components (i.e. power steering, alternator, smog pump) run much faster than what they are designed for. If your A/C is not working and you don't want to fix it, don't worry about it. Keep the proper belt on the car.
