Last week, I saw something interesting while walking my dogs that could lead to a good mystery story. I live near a marina on an estuary off the San Francisco bay. One night last week, I saw 2 sheriff's vans, about 35 sheriffs including divers. There were 2 divers in the water, big spotlights shining on the estuary, and a small boat trolling around. I never did find out what they were doing.

I'm not quite sure exactly what your teacher is asking for?!What I can tell you to write is one instant in your life, that you remember very well. Give it a beginning and an end. If it turns out to be more than five pages, look at it very carefully. See what you can delete to keep it a story. As a matter of fact my daughter had to write a short story not too long ago and the teacher wasn't clear about how she wanted the story written my daughter followed all the instructions that were given and the teacher still gave her a bad grade and said that she hadn't followed the instructions. The teacher gave all the students bad grades and said none of them followed the instructions.

I suggest you write about something you know about:
Write a story about a high school team (football, soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball). Write about the begining of the season to the end, this allows creativity and you will definatly have a beginning, middle, and end. You could create a problem like, the star player got hurt, then have a solution a freshman stepped in and did a great job.
When you write about something you are familiar with it allows you to give twist on the story that really could happen.
Good Luck

Here's one that I thought up. A boy borrows his friend's prized baseball to play catch with his brother, but it turns out to be signed by a famous ball player. The police are after the boy, and he either has to return the ball or run and hide!

Choose an event or memory from your past and build a fictitious situation around it. That's what I often do when I write.

Why couldn't it be a Sci-fi, or a personal experience--Non-fiction, or possibly a fantasy?
