Being gay affects my sex life. Nothing else. Being gay does not make me mature or intelligent or sexy or a genius.

What do you base your local gay 'community' on?

I am not a gay person when I'm walking down the street. I am not a gay person when I'm at work. I'm paid to be a professional at work, not to be a gay person.

I am only a gay man when I intend on meeting, seducing or f--king other gay men.

I'm not going to like every gay man just because I sleep with men, too.

Community is a feeling, not a state of being.

No there isn't a "gay" community...
there are those who band together for one reason or another...say for political reason...who use the words "gay community" to show or express a sense of unity...
If we based Community on what we do in bed with our genitalia...then would there be a fisters/rimmers/missionary/BJ community??...I think not

Community is a sense of common goals, common beliefs, and the desire to share with those of similar (not cloned) interests. Community has little to do with numbers - it has to do with values. Values are, however, not morals. Morals are geographically specific - what offends some is openly practiced elsewhere. One group's morals doesn't make another group's wrong or right. Morals are an adopted set of standards for a particular group, but must never be imposed on the entire terran community because the entire community doesn't share the same sense of morality. Christianity as we know it has only been in existence for 2000 years (give or take a handful.) The earth has been here for 4 billion+ years (give or take a handful of millenia). Community isn't based on sexual organs, just like it is not based on intelligence. You can change your behavior. You can't change stupid.

If that's all being gay is to you, I feel sorry for you.

I suppose that when things happen that affect the "Gay Community" it doesn't affect you at all? After all You are what, 30? To you AIDS has always been a reality, many of us remember when it wasn't. You weren't around to watch hundreds of people get sick from some unknown illness, you weren't old enough to remember when the American Government under Ronald Reagan did absolutely nothing simply because it seemed to only be affecting Gay Men. You probably haven't ever seen the AIDS Memorial Quilt. At the time of its creation, most people who died of AIDS-related causes did not receive funerals and their remains were in fact refused by many funeral homes and cemeteries. Lacking a memorial service or grave site, The Quilt was often the only opportunity survivors had to remember and celebrate their loved ones' lives.
The feeling of Community, in many instances, is born out of tragedy. Apparently that's something you know nothing about.

I think there is a 'gay' community, but it is not based on gay people defining themselves but by gay people being defined by others. The gay community exists because gay people have been told that they are wrong and do not deserve certain legal rights, and that has pushed gay people who otherwise have nothing in common together to give a united voice against the discrimination that they suffer.

Yes true, that would apply to with blacks, hispanics other races and people as well. We aren't paid to be black, we don't necessarily like every black person there is. I was born black and will die black, but I feel the same. But as I said in my last answer to you question, community, culture, lifestyle any of these words make up who we are. And society just loves to slap a label on us, rather you are having sex with men in your bedroom, or I'm a black woman dating a white guy or whatever. Society thrives off of labelling people. And everyone is to ignorant to see that.

Wby do you define it just based on sex? Is a heterosexual person only "straight" when they're in bed? Gay "community" is based on a lot more than sex. Politics, human right issues, culture, gay media, religion, etc. . .lots of things make up any kind of "community"--no less this one.

I think there is a kind of community out there. We have places that we frequent, our own sports leagues, etc. There are stereotypes that some people try to live up to. There's parts of cities where we congregate. We've kinda banded together and formed our own society/community.

Maybe it's not so much about what's going on behind the doors as it is the commonality between individuals due to persecution, coping styles, or other sociological factors.
