first turn off the gas....and the pilot light!
attach hose to the faucet on the bottom and put the hose outside to drain.
there...ya go!
If you want to completely drain the water heater, turn off the water at the top, the air pressure will push the water out. after it is drained then fill a little bit then drain again to get the build up out! Trial and error as your water heater responds you will know then what to do. good luck

Shut off the water inlet valve, hook a hose to a drain valve and then drain the pressure off the tank.
Once the pressure is relieved, turn the inlet feed valve on then off repeatedly. This will help flush the sediment out of the tank.
Keep doing it until the water runs out the hose clear.

Everything they said is true but one more thing:
Open the T&P valve on top of the water heater.
it's the valve that has a pipe going down the side of the waterheater. just lift the lever 90 degrees and you should have good drainage

i flush mine about every 2 yrs. heres what i do:
turn off the power to it.....
turn off the gas valve to it......
screw in a water hose to the bottom outlet......
make sure that u dont cut the water supply off....
stretch hose out to yard....
let run until all hot water stops coming out.....
let run about 10 mins with cold water.....
close hose valve.....
turn on power......
turn on gas......
