Practice.
You are likely not clearing the top. It should be a smooth motion; versus rolling over the ledge.

I bruise sometimes. Usually it's because I'm 5'4" and I never use the door (who has time?), and sometimes I come in fast and hit the wall as I'm going over. Hence the bruise.
As others have said, over time you kind of get your own technique based on your body size and strength, and you'll bruise less. It used to happen to me all the time -- now I get a couple of "wall bruises" a year.
As everyone else has said, you're going to bruise everywhere anyway, from the puck to stick contact to whatever else you connect with at high speeds, so I wouldn't worry about it. Scars and bruises are part of the game, the price you pay for how AWESOME a time you're having.
(Wait until you get your first "I accidentally stopped the slap shot with my inner thigh that's unprotected by padding" bruise.)

The reason you are bruising is for 2 reasons: [assuming your are playing in a NHL relugation or USHL or AAU hockey rink]
1) your short [ smaller than 5'8.5"]
2) your doing it incorrectly.
If its reason #1, use the doors or do the shoulder hop (this is dangerous though because you can dislocate your shoulder if you slip)
If its reason #2, your girdle may not be supporting you sufficiently OR your are going in full speed trying to did it which would just prove that you are a moron, SLOW DOWN. And actually, this is the case most of the time for guys just learning or trying to do it so just slow down before you get to the boards.

Probably not a good thing. Bruising has never been a sign of a high IQ or anything like that so I guess NO. No it's not good.

It's slightly better than football to the groin and yet worse than baseball line drive to the back of the leg.

Bad it really becomes when the opponent is aggressive and you are not alert enough.
