I think I'll stump you all with this one!
How many years has he been gone? Where did he go? And what color ribbon should you tie around what kind of tree if you still want him?

Tony Orlando and Dawn
Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree

been 3 long years............

loved that version!

Also Johnny Carver..but a lot of debate over this song and really very interesting and historic. The original chosen "color" was white. Much to do with prison, but later changed to "yellow".

The original composure by Levine and Brown says that in the Army story, according to Brown, the symbol was a "white kerchief," but "white" will not scan in the melody to which Levine and Brown set their lyric. Post staff writer Saundra Saperstein also talked with Levine, and her story on the front page of the January 27th issue quotes him as saying that they made the ribbons yellow because the color seemed "musical and romantic.

So for what it is worth? Yellow being actually denoted as a color of cowardliness and un-likely, (sometimes associated with criminals and prostitutes) became the color of patience and waiting.

Not stumped............loved this song since I was a babe!
