Either your brake pedal switch is defective, or the relay on the pedal is going out.

Most likely it's the brake light switch. It's a plunger-type switch under the dash, behind the brake pedal where the arm connects to the firewall.
Secondarily, have you checked your fuses?
Got enemies or rodents in the area? Perhaps the wires leading to the rear lights have been cut.
Did you check the bulbs themselves? Did you recently have some sort of other electrical problem that could have burnt out the bulbs, or the various systems in between your alternator, battery, computer, fuse box, wiring?

i have a 91 Buick regal same problem move the turn signal switch while putting your foot on the brake have someone behind the car to let you know if brake lights come on if they do then your turn signal switch is bad.because when you make a turn and apply the brake it cuts out the brake light so the turn signal can flash

it might be a fluid pressure switch that needs to sense a certain amount of fluid force in the line before the brake lights can come on this seems really far fetched to me but it is a possibility. especially since you said after you tap the pedal a few times it comes on, also there is usually a switch on the master cylinder that sences when the brakes are applied. thats the best i can tell ya.

it probably a bad lead or ground going to the light try tracing the wires or grounding it out to the other brake light to troubleshoot it,or it can be a filament on the actual light is going out if the new ground doesnt work replace the bulb after that trace the wires back to your fuse block and make sure everything is in order.good luck

You need a new brake pedal switch. they're fairly cheap $12.
Easy to replace too.
But first, pull the fuse and look at it for corrosion on the spade ends.
