my mom died 4 years ago. I wasn't in the position to do anything. when I went to visit her prior, she told me what she wanted, and that she had stuff stashed all over the house. My mom was a good gambler. Her friend and police officer husband cleaned out my moms house. I get a call from the mortgage co. telling me there is activity on her credit cards. she gives me partial numbers, I close out 3 acct's from here. Her friend didn't even list her 4 children with the coroner, I spoke to him. She said she had power of attorney, when I looked that up, couldn't find it. My mother had 2 cars, jewelry, money stashed. Friend says my mother told her to sell it all. It all just doesn't jive. She tells me that they had a buyer for the house, but since their name wasn't on anything, they walked away...My mother had a 401k, had to have had an insurance policy. Friend said there was no will. I only get a call after she is dead, cremated, house emptied....anyone else think this just wasn't right?

not much space to write it all. She split on my sister when she was just 12. My sister has had it hard for her whole life. I get very angry when I think about her "friend" and my sister goes without constantly. My mom could have made my sister's life a little better had things been differently, but the "friend" took "care" of it all....wonder what if any, anything can be done now....

reason I posted it here, is because I knew I wasn't the only one who has experienced this, and wondered what someone else did, or what they were advised to do......

You should have got a lawyer long ago. There are specific processes for someone dying without a will, depending on where you live. If she had assets like cars and the house, a public trustee could have been involved. Sorry but your story is not very clear. If you think your mother's assets have been stolen by someone who did not have power of attorney and who knew that your mother had living children, call the police.

It seems pretty obvioius that your mother took no steps to ensure that any estate she might have had went to her children. First find out if she had a will. If so follow up to see if that was enforced. If not, check the laws in the state in which she died.
