I don't think your grandma is being weird. It can happen just like she says.
Years back, a lot of houses on my street were being broken into. I caught this young woman going out of her way taking pictures of houses at different angles. I asked her what she was doing and she said it was a school project and then she started asking me questions about the residents and I told her to get going before I called the cops. I got her license plate number and I did call the cops. My neighbors thanked me.

No, it's not against the law, unless you're trying to take pictures of someone through their window. I think it sounds like a good idea. I love taking pictures. It's fun and you can find some interesting things on a walk. Maybe you should explain to her exactly what you want to capture in your photographs. Hopefully she will understand and let you do it.

Depends where you want to take pictures of course . At the park it's not really a crime to do that or places where it is designated as a sightseeing place . But around military installations yes it is unlawful and securities will even take your film ( not the camera itself ) or have you erase the pictures you took on your memory card .

If you are taking pictures of scenery then it's ok. If you are taking pictures of people that don't want their pictures taken, or don't KNOW that they are having their pictures taken, then that could pose a problem. Let your grandma know what exactly you were going to be taking pictures of..

Generally, no -- which is why the papparazzi can do what they do -- if you can see it from where you have a legal right to be -- then there is no legal right to privacy, by and large -- this does not mean that people may not question your activities and the reasons behind them -- merely that you can take pictures --

If you look "Arab" and are taking pictures of major landmarks, then you can bet someone will call the cops.
It's a sad commentary on the state of the world today.

From what I hear, in England, and in certain countries it may be? I don't know. Does it have something to do with photographing children?
I know there are a lot of child preditors in Europe.
