From a biology standpoint, yes they are the same. But there *are* different breeds of mice and rats, just like with cats and dogs. Also keep in mind that pet store mice/rats are sort of domesticated in that they likely come from many, many generations of people-raised mice/rats. So they are much more accustomed to people and being handled, etc.

No, the ones they sell at the store are bred in different colors to be more attractive. Wild mice are brown. Also the mice in stores can be different sizes but in real life mice are very small.

Wild mice same goes with wild rats tend to carry nasty diseases, or germs.
Store mice are gorgeouse! Just make sure you purchase one that isnt afraid of people eg doesnt get scared if you look at it or walk pass. And if you want to breed make surethe babies will have a good view of the surroundings from birth, that way they wont be scared ;)

no, they are not. pet store mice and rats ore more closely related to lab mice and rats, and not exposed to the diseasesthat wild ones are often carriers of. the store mice and rats are usually much calmer and easily tamed than the wild ones.

That's actually a really good question. And it's a determination that, to a person unfamilar with rats (and even to some familar with rats), is particularly challenging. It's challenging because there is no "Rattus Domesticus" species. Unlike comparing a basset hound to a wolf, you won't be able to just look at the basset hound and say "well, he sure does have big ears - guess he's tame!" Rather, you'll have to look a bit more closely.

Here are some differences:

Nope! Pretty much all mice/rats in pet stores are captively bred which means they're disease free and used to human contact.

Wild rats and mice can have diseases, whereas petstore rats and mice have been bred in captivity so they are fine.
