Just over a week ago my 4 1/2 month old started having a low grade fever and several poopy diapers a day. The diapers are kind of runny but not what I would consider diarrhea. She's also not sleeping through the night anymore and is up every couple hours. Does this sound like the effects of a typical virus? I took her to the doctor and she thinks virus. How long do they last?

The doctor said that there is no medication for a virus but I can give her pedialite and tylenol for the fever.

Could be that or also the baby could be teething.

A virus does not cause a fever. Bacterial infections cause fever, and it is best to let the fever do its job and not give her anything to bring it down unless it is really high for a long period of time or she starts acting lethargic. A fever has a purpous, its job is to raise the body temperature to a level high enough to kill the bacteria. There is only a small window of temperatures that most bacteria can live in.
She could also be teething. This sometimes triggers a very mild fever as well. Its still best to just let it run its course just in case. If it lasts more than 4 or 5 days and you see no teeth coming through, take her back to the doctor.

Well, if she is still having a fever, even low grade and continues to have runny stools, then I would take her back in tomorrow. Is she taking formula/breast milk OK? Are there any other symptoms, stuffy nose or congestion? I would be most concerned about the prolonged fever. A cold virus though can last a couple of weeks (but not the fever).

This could be a virus, but based on my experience, your baby could also be teething. All three of my daughters had most of those syptoms when they where teething. But if it's just a virus it should run it's course in about 48-72 hours.

I agree with Mom of 5. All sure signs of teething. If you tell the Dr. you think its a virus, of course they won't argue with you. If she checked out fine, giving her some Tylenol an hour before bedtime should comfort her aching gums. You can check to see if she's teething by massaging her gums to see if they are swollen.

Go with your gut instinct. If you think something is wrong, go to the doctor. It may be a virus, or it may not, but it doesn't hurt to be too careful. You've been to the doctor already though, so why didn't she give you some kind of medication?
