Depending on whether you are right or left handed. Now when setting the table, the fork(s) is always to the left and the knife and spoons to the right... don't ask me why, I really don't remember - something to do with - only cutting your meat, one bite at a time.Hope that answers your question... OH, chopsticks are usually laid across the bowl(s).

Both. If I have to cut something, I place my fork in the left hand. Usually the right, seeing as I am right-handed for certain foods.

i am right handed, but i eat with my fork (or spoon) in my left. unless i feel like using chopsticks (they are fun - you actually don't have to be of an oriental culture to use them - it is legal) i do that with my right. however, if i am eating just with my fingers i use either, but mostly my left.

placement of the fork is on the left side because you usually need your knife to cut up your food.......most people cut their food with the knife on right and fork on the left and then switch the fork to the right hand to eat their food.
