attention bank employee's What happens to safety deposit box contents if not claimed ?

My mother died in July of 1995 and I just learned that she may have had a safety deposit box in a bank somewhere in ONTARIO CANADA, I have a set of keys that I found in her possessions and was told they were for a safety deposit box.

The person above me is absoulutely correct about how it's handled in U.S. After the owner cannot be located for (usually) two years, the box goes to the state.

This references U.S. law:

If you do not pay your rental fee for a number of years (as determined by State law) and after attempts to notify and locate you prove unsuccessful. In that case, your safe deposit box will be reported as abandoned and the contents will be turned over to the State's unclaimed property office.

Often this happens because the renter dies and the heirs have no knowledge of the box or its contents. The good news is that even if the State has sold your unclaimed property, you or your heirs still have the right to claim its value. To contact a State's unclaimed property office (sometimes part of the treasurer's office), check the State government section in your phone book.

surprising it wasn't stated in her will, unless of course she didn't have one. you may be able to find a copy of the will and see if there is any reference to the safety deposit box. nothing would have been removed from the box unless someone else has already claimed the contents, for instance, your dad, sibling, relative etc. find out who she banked with and go from there
