Well, since China has stopped associating themselves with North Korea, (they discouraged kim from testing missiles, never would have done that in the cold war) Japan and south korea should be able to "handle" the north if it comes to that. It certainly wouldn't help if we went in, remember what happened with Iraq...

Japan might have trouble, but south korea would probably be able to take them assuming they had support (not infantry, but aerial, and artillery) from japan they could do it.

Depends what you mean by handle. Japan has kept a small military since WWII basically relying on the US for protection. However, what it does have is very modern and capable. I doubt Japan could conquer northern Korea - just not enuf soldiers - but at the same time, the northern Korean army is not very capable and could do nothing to Japan. This leaves missiles. Japan has a missile defense system and a very capable navy - northern Korea does not. Neither are nuclear armed but if northern Korea obtained nukes, they'd better do it secretly and fast because Japan has everything it needs to go nuclear in less then a year. Bottom line: stalemate. My opinion? It won't happen anyway as it would harm both nations without much chance of success.

No, because there are to many pro North Korean. What American don't hear about is the Universities riots regarding the North Korean. Young people even in Korea live in a fantasy world.

I hate to disappoint you but according to the Army War College; Jane's and every military think tank in DC not only could Japan not be able to handle them neither could the US. They beat us in 1950 and could easily do it again. Atomic weapons if used would not help it would take so many we would ruin the earth. It is like Mao told us in 1950 go ahead we can lose all you can kill. Sadly these two countries could stand up against anyone one foe and certainly two or three the reports do not say how many or who it would take to make a stand. I think us, South Korea, Australia and two or three more could do it bt we would come away deeply bruised. We should have let Doug handle it his way when he asked.

God Bless You and The Southern People.

Japan has a great influence in Asia and it can force North Korea to give up its nuclear arms program through diplomacy.

the jap have a some distance greater suitable air and naval rigidity yet have not got the floor forces to bypass head to head with NK. the jap ought to attempt to squeeze the North Koreans. there's a extensive ethnic Korean inhabitants in Japan with family members in NK. they provide vast economic help which the jap ought to truly decrease off. the jap ought to enforce a naval and air blockade. it is all based on the instant subject. Any time the jap people settle directly to alter the stability of potential they could gain this. My wager is that 24 months after making the determination Japan ought to container an quite credible nuclear rigidity and an quite effectual military not long after that. After analyzing the diverse comments earlier me i'm surprised by utilising the lack of expertise.

Japan is not trying to handle whole issues regarding to N.Korea by themselves.
And Japan's concern is not only the nuke but also the abduction done by N.Korea.
Government is addressing this as a most important issue.

No. But they could come close. Kim's army is a joke: an enemy air force could tear it (and its necessary logistical support) to shreds. And Kim has no means of delivering his fizzle of a nuclear device. It would not take much of a demonstration to show that the DPRK is basically useless from a military point of view.

No, if only because NK has nukes and Japan does not. In a purely man v. man ground war, Japan could kick their assses. Once you bring in nukes... all bets are off.
