I grew up in Watertown (Sadly) and I made friends with a lot of army brats who went to school with me. I'm told that it's a tough place to move too, especially if you're used to a bigger city.

The worst part is the snow. There's a ton, get used to it. It's also very cold, I remember it once hit -50 with windchill! Although I haven't been back in the past 5 years, there's unfortunately not much to do - culturally. There's one mall, which isn't really that great and last time I was there, it was also the only movie theatre. Unfortunately, Watertown doesn't have a great bar scene either. Ft. Drum itself is about 15 minutes from Watertown which doesn't seem like that much, but the drive out is in the middle of nowhere.

BUT, there are some highlights to the region. If you like outdoor stuff - there's lots of skiing in the area, or hiking, camping and the like. I always loved Thompson Park. It's a big park that overlooks the city and apparently designed by the same people who did Central Park. Also, the 1000 Islands are only a half hour away. They're not that fun in the winter, but it is awesome in the summer. Sacketts Harbor is a small town on Lake Ontario about 15 minutes away from Watertown. It has a bunch of cute restaurants and shops and historical sights. Syracuse is about an hour away and it has a huge mall - lots of Watertowners would do a monthly shopping trip down there. If you wanted to get away - Ottawa is about 2 hours away, and Montreal about 3-3.5, Toronto was about 5 or 6.

I worked at feet Drum for 3 months. in general all and sundry who works on base lives in Watertown, ny - a close-by city. Its a surprisingly small place yet its have been given a great mall and a few stable places to consume. The library there is surprisingly stable too. The housing is likewise extremely much cheap and there are some extremely effective old historic properties there. We rented a 2 mattress room place and we had a great backyard, huge rooms and quite a number of alternative shops interior sight. i do no longer think of you will have difficulty looking a place to stay in case you choose for to stay off base. fort Drum, as military bases is going, is extensive. we mightcontinual for an hour and nevertheless no longer be outdoors the confines. Its a great base even if it does get coated in Snow interior the iciness time! One stable element approximately residing in that section...is which you're surprisingly close to to Canada and you will trulycontinual around the border for days journeys. We went to Kingston and Toronto some circumstances interior the summertime that's countless relaxing! get exhilaration from!!!

Buy a snow shovel and ice scraper for your car. Watertown sits right on the end of Lake Ontario and the wind dumps an incredible amount of snow on Watertown.....If you like skiing or skating or hockey... your in like Flint.
