My wife has the IUD that does NOT emit a hormone. It's just up in there and has no side effects other than a little spotting every now and then. It has been a GODSEND.

Keep in mind, symptoms vary from person to person. Birth control regulates my periods. It makes them lighter and shorter, and makes my PMS like a bajillion times easier to deal with. My cramps aren't nearly as bad as they are without it.

ON THE OTHER HAND, birth control does make me gain wait more easily, but that's ok, I should be managing what I eat anyways. It really hasn't affected much for me, I've changed clothing sizes since I started it, but that's because I grew two inches taller. Birth control makes me throw up if I don't eat enough, however, so I have to take it at night. If I really haven't eaten enough, it wakes me up, and that sucks mold. Like whoah. Nothing worse. It also plays havoc with your blood pressure. I'll probably have to go off it in my mid to late twenties because I'm a stroke risk, and I absolutely cannot smoke.

DO NOT SMOKE ON BIRTH CONTROL. JUST DON'T DO IT.

Personally, I like birth control. I like the freedom it gives me from worrying about when my period's going to come, it's irregular, I don't need to worry as much about getting pregnant, I'm not in as much pain, but I do have to watch what I eat, and make sure I do eat, otherwise things get messy.

Talk to your doctor.

I used to take Lo-Oval 28 it never made me gain any weight, and it worked beautifully for me. They tried putting me on Ortha-Novem 7-7-7 - that pill for me was a nightmare! I had all sorts of problems, bloating was the least of them - but each person reacts different to different medications. It may take you trying one or two different kinds to find the one that works perfect for you and your body.

Best thing I could recommend is to stay in close contact with your Dr. while working through the kinks of which pill will benifit you the most.

Good luck!

i didn't get PMS and i didn't gain weight. but, if you've never experienced cramps before than, birth control pills will start giving you cramps. I've taken Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. it's really good. and I've also tried the patch. the patch isn't that great, i wouldn't recommend it.

Every one is different. I depends on what pill you have, if it strong enough... Ive been on lo ovral for 4 months now and its a pain in the butt. I get extremely hormonal, i have gained 10 pounds and my face is breaking out... i know its bad and i just went to my gyno and we are switching mine because of those... you have to see how you are on it because you really never know how your going to react. a friend of mine lost a whole bunch of weight because she was sick every time she took hers. the first month your on your pill if its bad is the worst

I have the Mirena IUD........love it . No PMS and very light periods. It is best if you have a child before getting an IUD though.
