Check with the United Mine Workers.
Children have always mined - from ancient times to Western Pennsylvania to present day Africa and Asia.
My great-grandfather went down in the mine when he was 5. Little hands find lots of good things. He quit the mine when he was approximately 16 when he got a job on the Pennsylvania Railroad, eventually becoming a conductor working out of Buffalo.
When he was in the mine, he saw the sun on Sunday. Every other day of the week he was in the mine before the sun came up and didn't come out until the sun went down.
