White spots that make your fish appear as if it has been sprinkled with salt is likely an infection of "ich" (ichtyoptherius multifiliis). If the patch at the end of the fin appears "cottony", you may have a secondary fungus infection.
Ich can be treated effectively with a variety of medicines. If you don't have any live plants, snails or other invertebrates, my favorite treatment is chelated copper salts. "Aquarasol" is one trade name.
Raise water temperature to ~80 degrees. Remove activated carbon from the filter. Add medication daily in the dosage indicated on its instructions. Repeat for 3-5 days.
At the end of this time, place fresh carbon in the filter, and do a normal partial water change (10% - 30% of the tank's total volume).
Ich infections can be a sign of stress. Make certain that you are practicing good maintenance habits (esp. regular partial water changes), not overfeeding, and not overcrowding. Your neighborhood aquarium shop should have plenty of good, free advice, and can help test your water (or sell you a basic test kit and help you learn to use it -- you needn't get carried away here, though).
Enjoy your fish!

Sounds like a type of parasite, similar to a mite. Medicate it. If it's in a community tank, quarentine it immediately and medicate it in it's hospital tank. Depending on how long the problem has been going on, as in, longer than 24 hours, you'll want to medicate the community tank as well to be sure it doesn't spread to your other fish. You can pick up a parasite medication at any local pet store. One warning to you: If you have any snails, shrimp, crabs, etc. in your tank, remove them before medicating. The parasite medication will kill them. Good luck!
Ich and White Spot is typically like white crystals or white, fluffy cotton on the body, NOT the fin. It will also be in large clumps. Defenately sounds like a parasite, not Ich.

It's most likely Ich -- there are some chemicals you can purchase but I recommend turning the temp up to about 88degF and adding aquarium salt. There's a fantastic article about it here: http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Ranson_Ich.html
PLEASE NOTE: I see many people recommending medicines. THIS SHOULD BE A LAST RESORT. QuICK cure and the like don't cure ick, they just make it go dormant. You'll just see it again in a month or so. Furthermore, water parameters have NOTHING to do with Ich. The healthiest tanks in the world get Ich.

It may be ick, which can be treated by putting medicine in the tank, you need to take care of it right away. You can take you water to the pet store to be tested, and read the medicine packages to get a basic diagnosis for the type of problem the fish has. Most likely, water problems allowed this to start, make sure to test your water for ph, nitrates, and nitrites regularly. Treat you fish right away so it does not die, you may need to use a hospital tank.

it sound liek ICK but if the tail starts to look liek tis rotting and shredding and the ends of the tails start to turn white then it could be tail rot. both of these can be treated. the best thing to do is to go to your local pet store or aquarium stor and descrie the symptoms your fish has they will be able to diagnose it and will recommend a tank treatment for our fish. good uck!
