If my choices were an external hard drive vs Multiple USB flash drives I would go external drive, more space, no swapping multiple USB flash drives so saves time as well. The better option is to transfer files over the network or use a crossover network cable. Way cheaper, a 100GB External HD would be about $100, a 2GB Flash drive would be about $10, a crossover cable would be about $5 Transferring over the network can be done in 1 step rather than 2.

No, the main difference is that a flash drive is more portable. You can fit it in your pocket usually, and they only have a fraction of the storage of a USB hard drive.
Think of a flash drive as an over size floppy disk, something you might put a few photos on to bring to a friend, or put a paper on to bring somewhere to print.
In terms of backing up wii data, I am not sure how big your files would be, but think of it this way - the hard drive will probably hold the equivalent of multiple flash/jump drives. ON the other hand you can by a flash/jump drive for around ~$20USD. I would start with one of those and if you fill it up go find an external hard drive.
Look somewhere like Best Buy or CompUSA, they usually have 1GB flash drives on sale for about $25 USD

No, they are not the same. The SD card is a flash drive and flash drives have limited capacity. An external USB hard drive is essentially a hard disk but which is one that you can connect via USB port.
Both flash drive (or thumb drive) and external hard drives can now be plugged to your PC. If you have a lot of stuff, better use the USB hard drive. One plus point for the hard drive, it's portable.

USB hard drives and USB flash drives are different...
USB hard drives are simply hard disk casings with a hard disk inside... It emulates an IDE adapter... Be aware that most USB hard drives are sold as casing only and you have to buy the hard disk separately... Most USB hard drives have external adaptors to maintain power... And some use two headed USB cables to get power from another USB slot. So if you have only ONE USB slot, you'll have a problem.
You may only be buying a USB hard drive casing with the price under $100. While flash disks (or thumb drives) are compact pocket size storage media... You can already use it as soon as you buy it.
In your desktop PC, when you plug in a USB hard drive, Windows sees it as another IDE hard disk... When you plug a flash drive it will be seen as Removable Memory Storage...
In terms of usage, there is no difference between USB hard drives and flash drives. You can save any type of file in each as long as it will fit the drive.

No, it is not the same thing,
An USB Hard Drive, is a Hard Drive (a common external hard drive) with a USB interfase with the computer (it connect to a PC using the USB port).
And, a flash drive, is another type of storage device, based on flash memory (mostly memory chips).

u should be able to save games on the flash drive...however a flash drive and a hard drive are not the same thing....the flash drive uses what is called flash memory...outside of that the only difference between a flash drive and an actual hard drive is the fact that a hard drive is slightly faster.

No. An external USB hard drive uses read only memory (ROM) while flash drive uses random access memory (RAM). As a rule, RAM is faster than ROM.
