It is possible to have a benign dictator - someone who has absolute control and uses it (to some extent) to benefit the people he governs. But it is hard to argue that the government of Cuba is anything else when opposition groups are illegal and there are no observers or NGO oversight during elections.
Castro has done a lot for his country, particularly in terms of education and medicine, but it is sad to see it come with a loss of civil and human rights. I think it's misleading to look at his actions as entirely good or bad.

Since the fall of the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959 Cuba has been a one-party state led by Mr Castro.
He exercises control over virtually all aspects of Cuban life through the Communist Party and its affiliated mass organisations, the government bureaucracy and the state security apparatus.
This is what a dictator is.

Castro has had millions put to death. He forces the men in cuba to work as slaves for foreign corporations and the women to work as prostitutes.
Before he murdered his way into power, cuba was a wealthy, prosperous, happy country. Now, it is one of the poorest, worst places on earth to live.
Is this what you mean by "doing for his country"? BTW, saying such things around americans of cuban descent is an invitation for the worst of *** kickings. Those people are here because they fled castro's murder squads. Most of them did not make it out alive. Most of them have lost family, friends and other loved ones.
You should be ashamed of yourself for saying such things.

Just because he has done good things for his country does not mean that he was not a dictator. For some reason or another, the word dictator has negative connotations, have we forgotten such great dictators like Elizabeth the First?
