Snoring CAN be related to weight gain, but many slender people snore as well. There may be a genetic component. He CANNOT control it, so people who suggest aggressive cures are cruel.

Snoring can be a symptom of a very serious disorder called sleep apnea, which can, if untreated, lead to heart damage and even death.

If you snore softly once in a while, then this is probably not apnea, but if you shake the house, snore like a bear, and drive your spouse to the guest bedroom, then apnea is a distinct probability. Sounds like your husband is in the second group, so he needs medical help, not poking, smothering, or kicking!

Apnea is usually treated with the use of a device called a CPAP. He can't just buy one of these - they are sold only on prescription, as the pressure needs to be adjusted to his individual needs, with too high pressure being as dangerous as too low. CPAP stops snoring 100% and usually makes the patient feel generally more energetic and alert during the day as well.

Please get him to ask his doctor to refer him to a sleep clinic right away. They usually have a long waiting list, and it's important to get the process started ASAP.

Get a strip of tape (not duct tape as some else suggested) and place a strip across the centre of his nose, it helps to keep the nasal passages slightly open. Make sure he doesn't drink alcohol before bed, this causes relaxation and collapse of the airways, leading to snoring. You could also get him to have a tracheotomy fitted, where they put a tube directly into your throat for breathing, drastic and cruel, but it will help you sleep.

Other than that, it's the pillow.

Been there done that, Both my husband and I would wake up so miserable and tired because of the goings on the night before, He snored terrible, he would wake me out of a sound sleep, then I would wake him up to stop snoring. This went on five or six times a night, I was so tired at work I could barely keep my eyes open. finally I fixed up the spare room for myself, he wasn't to happy at first but I told him I'm sorry I just can't go through it anymore. LETS SEE HOW THIS WORKS OUT. It worked out great for both of us.. We're not waking up tired anymore and seem to be more productive through-out the day. He comes to visit me(if you know what I mean) but then it's right back to our prospective beds and off to dream land.. I'm not kidding, it's the only thing that worked for us. I couldn't kill him,(although I wanted to) sleep aids didn't help so this was the only alternative Try it and SWEET DREAMS.

Lemme guess, he's over 40 and very much overweight. It is highly probable that he is suffering from sleep apnea .The tissues in the back of his face are sagging and in the process two things are happening ; the sagging tissues vibrate creating a snore and the sagging tissues block his airway . It is critically important that you have you husband see a doctor ASAP. Failure to act could lead to this nonsense being stopped- permanently.
Good luck

If it is loud enough, he may have sleep apnea, which means that he is not getting enough oxygen hence the word apnea. But this can develop into serious medical problems such as Right Sided Heart Failure from Cor pulmonale. So I suggest that you get him to see is Doctor or a sleep specialist. There are over the counter medications and nasal strips that will help

Try using a magnet pillow slipped into the pillow, it has worked wonders in our household. short of doing that why not sleep in seperate rooms. My parents did, mum is in a much better mood than before.

Does he sound like he's choking or fall asleep while driving? If so, he could have sleep apnea.
Consult an MD.
