Simply put, Im a singer without a band and need some music for my songs since i cant play anything but the piano...
What would a synthesizer do for me?

You set it up to play as if it was other instruments and you can also play back recordings. So you could play back a whole drum piece that you did and then add horns, guitar, bass, ect. Then you keep adding layers till you are done. Then if it's portable you can just hit a button and your song will start. You can also burn them onto a cd and play your songs that way.

nothing really. it is basically a keyboard that makes a weird noise. if you listen to pretty much any song from the 80's you can hear a synthesizer.
