billions of people have flied in the past years, and how many have died... if you heard about every successful flight you would literally be hearing about them 24/7. personally im more afraid to drive to school than to fly... if it wasnt perfectly safe they wouldnt allow it.

I was terrified of flying all my life. But one day I stupidly promised a friend (who offered to pay) I would fly to Calfornia from Oklahoma for a visit. What am I doing? I asked myself! I couldn't go back on my word because the ticket was nonrefundable, so I went to the airport. There I sat in terror until I got up and went to the bathroom and threw up. My mother offered to reimburse my friend and take me home, but I stuck to my guns. I got on the plane. I made sure the night before, I stayed up all night so I would sleep on the plane. It worked. The only part that was uncomfortable (really) was the landing and they are usually rough by nautre. Since that flight, I fly everywhere without a care, so if you have to committ yourself to the flight, throw up before the flight, take medication, get soused or stay up all night, do anything to get you through that first flight. After that, it will be all downhill. Promise.

Take a sedative before getting on the plane. Also take a good book. A 17 hour flight is a long time to be cooped up in one place.

Xanax. Otherwise you could utilize some systematic desensitization techniques--expose yourself to the trigger in increasing quantities. For example, assess your comfort level. Are you comfortable looking at photographs of planes? How about videos of planes? Can you look at a real plane? You can also incorporate some self-soothing stress management techniques (i.e. progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises, diversion techniques). In addition, it is probably important to introduce some positive self-talk. For example, "millions of people fly on planes each day and are OK," "I have been on a plane before and it wasn't that bad." You'll have to play with what works for you.

I always say a prayer, and ask God to keep me safe, and I take the chewable dramamine with me. Hope this helps!
