Racist? I don't think I am, because I don't think any 'race' is inheirently inferior, but I do question whether or not upbringing, enviroment and general public perceptions can effect certain groups and influence them in a negative way. I would definately consider myself to be prejudiced at times. I have had formed opinions of people (often wrong) based on general perceptions without actually knowing the person first. I almost always end up looking back at that and feeling guilty for being such an idiot.

I would like to think I'm not racists and if someone made a racists comment on me or any other person, I'd get pretty ticked off. We are all living, breathing people. The only thing different is the skin color and there is no reason we should make that a basis for judging. God looks at the heart, not the appearance, as should we all.

Unfortunately, we're all constantly surrounded by racist media images. Also sexist, homophobic, and bigotted ones. To a certain extent we've all absorbed this information. I highly recommend the book _Blink_. It talks about the way that we've not only absorbed these stereotypes, but how that has affected the way we deal with the world. It's all very subtle, but it definitely happens. For instance, how many images of violent black men do we see in the media? It seems like every black guy on tv is either a thug or a reformed thug. Now, honestly, everyone, how many of you get a bit more alert when you see one or more young black men near you? I know I'm guilty of this, and I try to be as open-minded and tolerant as possible. I know intellectually that not every black man wants to steal my wallet, and I even know of many of the reasons behind the higher crime rates among minority populations- poverty, etc. That doesn't help though when my reptilian brain kicks in and insists that black guys want to hurt me. Stupid tv for teaching that part of my brain stupid sh!t like that. It happens with other stuff, too. Watch this feminist sometime when she has a computer question. Unfortunately, I do have more of a tendency to ask the guys. It's not that I don't believe women can have mad computer skills, it's just that men are considered more tech-y, and I've absorbed that.
I think the real problem kicks in when we don't want to accept this, or we want to accept it as reasonable. If we know that we do this sort of thing, know that it's wrong, and want to change it, at least we're headed in the right direction. But then, maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better.
As for the racist comment question, it really depends on who it is. If it's my immediate family or friends, I call them on it. If it's not someone I know well... I'd like to say I call them on that, too, but honestly, it doesn't always happen. Sometimes, I rely on the more subtle "bad puppy!" signals, like stiffening up, or looking shocked or something. I'm a terrible, terrible person, and I wish I was better.

I am not racist and if someone makes a racist comment you ignore them because they are not worth the time of even acknowledging their ignorance

No I'm not racist. I accept or reject people on an individual basis.
When I'm around someone who makes a racist remark or comment I speak up in defense.

I maintain that ALL people fit the current definition of "racist" in one way or another. Nowadays if you even have a sexual preference towards one race, you are racist.
If you prefer to stay away from cultural differences of other "races" then you are racist. It has gone too far. Political correctness prohibits even discussing race in a logical or scientific sense.

Everyone is a little racist. It's a concept we're all socialized into by those around us.

Society forces everyone to stereotype based on superficial crap like skin color. I have and always will ignore ignorance, that person doesn't know me personally so how can they make an assumption based on my skin tone.
