Like, what are some general things that they should be? Tall, fast, agressive, etc...What matters most? I am a junior in highschool and I have taken an interest in Lacrosse and would like to know. Also, what can I do if I want to play for my school's team? How can I prepare? Thanks.

It's all about practice. You need to decide what kind of player you want to be: offense or defense. Depending on that, get the right stick (be sure to follow the guidelines from US Lacrosse about what kind, since they are pricey)

The best way to practice is first to get a handle on how to cradle the ball. Find a wall on the side of your house with no windows and throw the ball against the wall and catch it. Great practice. My husband is a lacrosse coach, and this is always the first thing he even has his experienced players work on. If you can handle the ball right, you can play.

Speed will always work to your advantage, no matter which position you play. If you are really fast, go for being a short stick attack. Long-stick defensive players will certainly be running and defending the ball, but typically not running the length of the field the whole game like attacks do. I've known defensive long-stick players that have played their entire collegiate career, and never gotten close to the opposing teams goal, so if you want a chance to score, definitely don't play long-stick defense.

Go to http://www.laxpower.com and you can even pose this question there. You'll get a much better response with more details from players. Plus, you can find out more about rules and positions there as well.

The best suggestion I can give though is to work on speed/endurance, and throw the ball against the wall everyday for at least an hour. You'll be a great player before you know it!

Have fun... it's a great sport!

Hey buddy,

I suggest getting a good lacrosse stick first. Make sure the shaft is strong and light, and the head is something that complements what position you plan on playing. For example, defensive guys normally want a head that is strong and durable for stick checking. Offensive guys many times get off-set heads or something that helps develop a good pocket. Most importantly, try to get what they call "canadian mesh" - it's a mix of hard and soft mesh and will give you the best feel and release for the ball. If you want you can e-mail me and I'll give you the phone number of a place you can order this stuff from. The head I use is a Proton - most stores should carry it.

After the stick comes just natural athletic ability. Learn to cradle and if you're playing outdoor try to learn how to use both hands. Indoor lacrosse players generally stick to the hand their strongest with on the field.

I'm a firm believer that you don't have to be a certain height/weight to be successful in lacrosse. It does help to be fast though.. if you consider yourself slow I'd put a long stick in your hand and learn to hit people hard and work on stick checks. If you're fast, learn to go one on one and finish (try to throw fakes at the goalie).

I could go on for a long time.. but I won't :)

I suggest you start running and get comfortable running "stop and go" for longer periods of time before your season starts and start "hitting the wall" - find a brick wall or something to throw against and work on accuracy and speed.

Good luck!

a rookie i talked to a few years ago said he made $300 a game. It's probably a little higher today, but not much. I know the best players today make $30,000 a year, plus endorsements. The good players make a living, but it's nowhere near the livng that other sports stars make.
