I have a close friend who is left-handed who will usually use her left hand (eating, sports etc) around me and other friends but will not use her left hand when her mother is around. She said her mother would spank her if she uses her left hand. She hates her mom being around because she feels like she is forced to use her right hand. She got cut a few times using a knife to peel fruits with her right hand but never got cut peeling fruits with her left hand.

I think she is very sneaky. She uses her right hand just to make her mom happy. Is that normal?

I think its not that her mother is completely crazy, but more so the way that she was raised and now it is only reflecting in the way she is trying to raise her daughter. Years ago, left handed people were thought to be a disgrace and were punished for using their left hand as their dominant hand. School teachers would punish students for writing left handed and would even in some cases refuse to teach a child that was left handed in belief that it would slow down the rest of the class. I myself am a true left hander and I've read alot over the years about the history of being left handed. you should i think let your friend know that there is nothing wrong, nor any way that she could of prevented being left handed...that is it truly a gift and that there are many great things about being left handed!! She should also let her mother know that she in indeed left handed and that she should accept it or get some help. Maybe a family counsellor or someone with an outside opinion.

Your friend's mom sounds abusive. Lefties are born that way; it's the way their brains were wired while still in the womb. No one chooses what hand is dominant.

A long time ago, people used to abuse lefties like that all the time. They believed that lefties had been touched by the devil. We know now that's a bunch of superstitious mumbo-jumbo, but apparently your friend's mother is still stuck in the middle ages and needs to get out of her ignorance-induced time warp.

Your friend is not sneaky. She's using her right hand around her mother to avoid physical and emotional abuse. No one wants to be hurt and will do anything they can to avoid it.

Why are you so judgemental of your "friend"? It sounds like she's afraid of her mom. She's not abnormal for avoiding corporal punishment. It's not normal to hit your child for being left-handed. It's the mom who has the problem here, not the child. If you truly like your friend and this is the only thing about her that makes her sneaky in your eyes, try having some compassion for her.

You have things so backwards.

I had a cousin whose parents threatened him and actually strapped his left hand to his side with a belt so he'd be forced to be right handed. These are the sorts of medieval abuses and prejudices left handers face. Your friend has no choice but to """be sneaky""" if she doesn't want to be bashed for doing something as natural as using the hand that feels right.

Wouldn't that make you """sneaky""" too? Think about it.

I was going to make a joke about them not being right but the truth is I think her mom has some issues.

It's normal for your friend to be left handed it's not normal for her mom to punish her for it.\

So no your friend is not sneaky it just her mom is crazy.

Your friend is not sneaky, she just doesn't want to get into trouble with a very abusive mom.
