Socialism is good in theory, because it treats everyone "fairly," where "fairly" means that everyone is required to do his best ("from each according to his abilities"), and everyone is given what he needs ("to each according to his needs"). Seems like a great idea. I think that most well-run families observe that principle.

Of course, in well-run families, everyone wants everyone else to succeed (and for the entire family to succeed). Once you try to expand this to a larger group (or an entire nation), it breaks down. No one does his best (there's no reward for hard work), and everyone claims to have great "needs" (in order to receive as much as possible from the state).

Actually, what I've described is communism, not socialism. But socialism is a less extreme version of the same idea. Instead of having the state own everything, the state just puts a very high tax on everything and controls much of the output of society.

The Scandinavian countries have done passably well with socialism, but it's noteworthy that they have high rates of alcoholism and suicide, and less vibrant economies than if there were greater rewards for hard work and entrepreneurship.

There are no supporting points for socialism. It is a terrible form of government and economy. (Unless, of course, you want to pull everyone down to the poverty level, so we all can share it)
