When a person has come face to face with absolute terror, fear and pain the only way they can continue to survive is to deeply repress that truthful reality. So too the atheists when they consider the reality of the existence of God and the result of rejecting Him. They have to make Him dissapear so they can face their own existence.

I disagree with you. I believe the Bible is man's word and his attempt to understand his existence. That's about it. I've been in terror and that has not in any way influenced how I feel. You are making the assumption that fear causes belief. Not so. I see religion as myth. Your belief is your belief. My belief is my belief. How anybody feels is how they feel. How anybody thinks is how they think. That's about it. If anybody believes in a God, I think that's fine. If somebody does not, that's also fine by me. To each his own. Peace.

That's a very dysfunctional way of dealing with pain, etc.. There are many people that do not need to repress feelings to survive. Every atheist is not dysfunctional. Believing in God and choosing to reject him is not the same as not believing. There's no reason to "make him disappear" if you don't believe he was ever there in the first place.

Perhaps some deep seated hurt or problems with certain theological issues. i.e. Darwin notes in one of his journals that he most completely dispelled his doubts on God around the time his father died. It seems he could not fully accept the idea of the problem of evil and of the theology of the existence of hell because surely he thought, his father would never have made it to heaven. And perhaps the other driving force to the edge was that of the death of his favorite daughter Anne.

It isn't that they reject him out of some deliberate apriori decision to just reject him, rather alot of times it stems from doubht from unresolved theological issues like "Why would a good God allow such bad things to happen", that lets them resort to "well there mustn't be a god after all".

It sounds plausible...in theory. But it's not true. I've known many atheists in my life and none of them fear the divine. To them, it's a non-issue. They can't be afraid of a non-issue; it's not possible.

If you are really interested in seeing what why atheists choose to be atheists, why don't you try talking to a few? Most of them are more than happy to talk to people about their non-belief, as long as you do not speak to them in a condescending manner or assume you know everything about them. They hate that. Come to think of it, lots of people hate that.

Do you know why people are atheists? - No i never profess to understand any one else, I am me, and i am an Atheist as i do not believe in any higher power or any god......and before you hop on one of your door knocking appeals to save souls from hell, i grew up in christian house with a Sunday school teacher for a mum, NO ONE in my family believes any more.....We concentrate our energy on scientific proof, caring for each other, protecting our environment and living a healthy life.

I don't know why people are atheists, but I'm interested to see what kind of answers you're going to get. (I'm not an atheist, by the way).

I never had a traumatic experience to "stray" away from god. I used reason and my brain. Sorry to disappoint you and your false logic.

Hmm, I think it is because everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions. Back off and live your own life and stop telling others how to live theirs.
