It more or less means that you can't get through the day without having a drink. You might wake up and have a drink for breakfast, and then drink while driving to work. Then you might have a beer with lunch, and then stop by a bar on the way home from work, and drink until late in the evening.
Worst scenario -- you might not even go to work at all because of drinking, or show up at work drunk and lose your job.
Having said all this, I guess the real issue is that you need to talk to a physican, who can help you find a new direction, and put meaning back in your life.

If you can manage 2 or 3 days without a drink and then you can't get through the next day without one, you are probably alcohol dependent. The trouble is it doesn't solve any problems, it only creates more. I know, I am that man!

Don't quite understand all the question, but alcohol dependent is being an alcoholic and depending on alcohol to get you through the tough things. THEN alcohol ruins your life.

It means a person feels they need alcohol to get through the day and night. My best friend is alcohol dependant she drinks every day and shes only 21 this has been going on for 4 years and have tried to help her it makes me angry and sad that she wont listen she it totally in denial and needs to admit to herself she has a problem. I think your son needs your support he may only get worse if you ignore the problem
I wish you the very best of luck

A person may be "alcohol dependent" if he or she feels that drinking alcohol is necessary to get through difficult tasks, or to feel better about things in his or her life. It sounds like other people's drinking is causing problems for you.
For more information on how to cope with someone else's drinking, you might want to check out Alateen or Al-Anon. here is a link to get started:

alcohol dependant means that you must have the drink regardless of the risk to obtain or risk of actions following the drinking binge
that you value that "sip" more than anything else in your life
that you feel no fear of the affect whether physically or financially
that you must have at least one drink to face any situation or each day
