Hi, I used to have a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank with a few live plants. The poor betta died (he was over 3 years old!) and now we are moving, so I'm not getting a new fish until after we move. My question is: During the move, can I drain the water from the tank? Or will that kill my plants? If I can't drain the water, do you have any suggestions for transporting live aquatic plants?

You can wrap the plants in wet newspapers and then put them in plastic bags. This will eliminate any chance of water seepage, and they will happily survive for over 48 hours.

I have carried aquatic plants from Hong Kong to United Kingdom and the process took me about 16 hours until I reached home and another 4-6 hours before I finally managed to immerse them in a water bucket. They were as fresh before that and fresher even after...so I guess it did not hurt.

No plant can live without water for long. Keep your aquatic plants wet during there move. Ziploce bags, coolers, plastic tubs, whaterever is easiest for you. Also, 3 years really isn't that old for a betta.

I transfered my whole 55 gal tank in a 30 gal cooler for 1200 mi. They all survived. You could get a small 2 gal cooler, or just wrap the roots of the plants in a wet paper towel. and wrap that in plastic.

Wrap your plants in newspaper and wet it good. Then put your plants in a leak proof plastic bag. When you get to your new home don't waste anytime setting up your tank.

I've moved aqua plants myself and i agree with everyone. aqua plants can live out of water for a short period of time, but what i have found is the leaves dry out, and thats why you need a little bit of water.

just keep the plant in a plastic bag with a little water in it then box it up... it should survive the move.. people ship/airmail live plants all the time.

No the plants will not live without water.... However you could transfer these to dirt then when you are ready for a new beta you can take the plants out of the dirt, rinse very carefully, and reuse them in the new set up....
