You can safely try to end almost any process: if this is a System process, it will not be ended; otherwise it will be ended without freezing.

I never broke Windows XP by ending processes. However, I almost always knew what process I am terminating.

It's possible that doing this will cause problems. You will not be able to kill processes that vital for the system to work. Try uninstalling software that you do not need. Some, more and more nowadays, like to start themselves up when you load windows.

You can take a look at the services on the computer by going to Start>Run>Type "services.msc"
