It could be hibernating or could have had a stroke. It sounds more like hibernation to me. I agree with the previous poster that it might be dangerous to wake him up.
This is a helpful article on how to wake him up:

Mke the environment very warm. He is hibernating because it is too cold. Turn up the heat gradually. He should wake up then. keep the temperature of the room warm always or this will happen again. Hamsters are desert creatures. So they are used to heat.

Bring him to the nurse, I had a stupid but loving hampster when i was younger...something fell on the wheel, and it got it stuck, and he climbed up the wrong side and broke his back and died instantly...
1) Check for a pulse, and get a small peice of card board, and make a home-made sling for the hampster out of it, and keep him still in one place...if he moves and has any broken bones or anything and they move, he could die.
Make sure you bring him to the vet in a safe and 'still' way, or as still as possible.

Ya know, one time I thought my bunny was dead, he wasn't moving I kept poking him and he felt stiff to me. I was so freaked out, I picked him up off the bed and started crying... loudly... this woke him up and he was PISSED! Anyways, my suggestion is to pick him up and try to wake him, incase he's sleeping, really hard. I wish you the best. And dude, if that doesn't work, I'd call a vet and ask what would be the best thing to do.

He could be almost dead, or he could be hibernating. Either way, take him to the vet! Even if it's just hibernation, it can be dangerous to just suddenly wake them up.
