Every other month my period is especially painful. It's getting to a point where it's so painful I can't function. I have a history of ovarian cysts and every once in a while it hurts when my partner and I have intercourse. My work schedule is making it impossible for me to get an appointment with an OBGYN, since I only know when my days off are on a week by week basis. I'm in a lot of pain, and my period ended two days ago. The pain it in my ovaries, and in my lower back...I can't stand for a long period of time without my legs getting shaky. I would really appreciate any input any woman has. Should I wait and get an appointment whenever I can, or should I go to the ER?

Take your butt immediately to the ER... right now. Stop waiting for answers. Your life is important and health should be your main concern at this very moment. I am not questioning your pain, but I have been through this and I know that it is serious... so go! NOW!

I recently went to the ER last week for an ovarian cyst of mine rupturing (I know, different problem) but my main point is, is that the ER is trained to get you in and out in a timely manner. They ususally don't have anyone specifically for ovarian problems, or even "female problems" in the ER, only an ER resident or doctor. Your best bet would be getting an appointment at your OBGYN, and maybe having to take a day off work? I know it sucks and maybe you cannot afford it, but one days pay may be worth finding out what if really wrong with you. I have slight pelvic cramping everyday and very painful intercourse with heavy cramps afterwards, not to mention VERY painful periods so after going to the ER and having NO help from them, I would suggest the OBGYN.

You can go to the ER but they won't be able to do much besides give you some pain medications and run a few tests depending on how big your hossy is. You are going to need to make an aptt with your OB/GYN eventaully to get the issue resolved. Call and make an aptt as soon as you find out what your days off are. If you can't get a day off on the day your aptt is, call the dr and reschedual later that wk - and keep doing it until you can make the aptt. I know it is a hassle but I have had to do it. Chances are this is a chronic issue and really needs to be resolved since it is causing you this much pain. If nothing else for the time being go on the Depo shot so that your periods will stop while you get all of this resolved.
I know there is a medical condtion consistent with what you are describing. So, here is what I would do. Go to your local Health Unit or Planned Parenthood. Get a depo shot. Make an aptt and play phone tag until you can make it.
I am sorry all of this is going on for you. You will be on my prayers.

If your legs are getting shaky, there's something not right. If you can't take time off of work, go to the hospital right now. What if it's something else?.. it could get much worse in a short period of time. Hopefully the pain is just that- lots of pain but not too much damage. I would go to the ER just to be on the safe side. I don't want to scare you, but my cousin was having crazy pain in her back and was always so tired. She waited it out for 2 weeks until she hardly had no feeling/response in her anus... and when she was rushed to the ER they found that she had a tumor wrapped around her spine and her blood was already molasses-like black/brown from lukemia. She fought it off and is recovering more than a year later... but it's dangerous to put off seeing someone about your body if you are in a lot of pain.

I'm not saying you have anything else as crazy as what my cousin had.. I'm just saying that putting off the pain may not be wise.

God bless you and I pray everything will be alright

Get the next availible appointment from your gyn doc. Take time off from work to get there. You could switch days off with someone, call in sick or leave early for the appointment. The ER won't be able to do much for you, they will probably give you some pain medication and tell you to follow up with your doctor. It is really not an emergency since it happens on a regular basis.

If you are in the US, your employer is required by law to give you time off for medical appointments. They may require a note from your doctor.

If your job can't understand that you need to see a doctor they don't care about you so you really don't need to be there. In the mean time you need to go to the ER until you can see the OBGYN. Make an appointment and tell you job that the ER doctor told you to. If there is a problem with you going and missing they are crazy. Your job is not more important then your health. Good Luck

Go to the ER if it is that bad. If it can wait, try to make an appointment at planned parenthood or some place like that that will have a more flexible schedule. Some doctors offices also have late hours on certain nights. Get to a doctor as soon as you can though. Put yourself first.

Go to the ER, if your pain is at 8-10 on a 1-10 scale and your legs are shaky.. GO. An ovarian cyst can rupture, and this is very painfull, and can lead to emergency surgery.

Most places will give you time off if you specify that you have a doctors appointment. Make one as soon as you can and let your employers know so they can schedule you around that. If you have insurance to help you with the bill and the pain is bad enough go to the E.R. They probably will only be able to give you something for the pain and refer you to a gyno. Good luck.

if it's so bad that you can't stand without your legs becoming weak you should probably just go to the ER and make sure it isn't anything more serious. I've never had an ovarian cyst, but had a friend who had one rupture - it was extremely painful.
